Empowerment and Protection: Increasing Awareness and Action Against Abuse in the IDD Community

Approved by Team Dynamics, LLC for 2 general social work CEUs as authorized by the LABSWE

Team Dynamics, LLC is collaborating with the Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council to offer the Taking Action Against Abuse is an interactive workshop. This workshop is designed to equip individuals with IDD, caregivers, families, and community partners with the knowledge and skills to recognize, prevent, and respond to abuse and neglect. This session will cover the definitions and signs of abuse, the importance of self-advocacy, and practical steps for reporting and intervention. Participants will engage in activities, discussions, and exercises to strengthen their ability to take protective action. By fostering awareness, confidence, and collaboration, this training empowers individuals with IDD and their support networks to create safer, more supportive environments.

About the speakers:

Sharon Delvisco, DSW, has over 30 years of experience supporting, educating, and providing technical assistance to people with disabilities to live and work in the community, their families, their service providers. She has received the Mentorship Award, the Humanitarian Award, and the Education Award from the American Association of Intellectual Disabilities Louisiana Chapter. She also received the Professional Advocate Award from the Advocacy Center in Louisiana. She has served on FPHSA Regional Advisory Committee and State OCDD Advisory Committee. Sharon is the parent of a young man that has IDD. She has lived experience as a person with long-term, persistent, chronic mental illness. Sharon is also a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.

This workshop is an in-person training event. It is not virtual.

Instructor:

Dr. Sharon Delvisco is employed as a Project Director for Training and Education with Team Dynamics, LLC. She has over 30 years of experience planning meetings, conferences, facilitating retreats, providing training and education. Sharon is an advisor for the Louisiana People First Chapter self-advocacy group. She has supported people with disabilities, their families, and the agencies that provide services to live in the community. “Separate is not equal” is the guiding principle for all her work and advocacy efforts in the human services field. She has experience organizing, facilitating, and developing training for people with disabilities, their families and the agencies that provide community-based services. She has a bachelor’s in psychology from the University of New Orleans, master’s degree in social work from Southern University at New Orleans, and a doctorate in Social Work Innovation from University of Southern California School of Social Work. She is an award-winning advocate for people with disabilities and meeting planner. She lives with her partner and son in the suburbs of Greater New Orleans.

Communicating Effectively with

People with Disabilities

People with communication disabilities come into legal, social service, and counseling settings every day as clients, victims, witnesses, and defendants. When professionals can’t bridge the communication gap, interviews become unreliable, informed consent is weakened, and rights and treatment outcomes are put at risk. This interactive, evidence-based workshop helps attorneys, social workers, and licensed professional counselors communicate effectively with people who use few or no spoken words. Participants will look at the neurological, muscular, and cognitive conditions that affect communication. They will review what the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires for effective communication, along with professional ethical duties, and survey high-tech and low-tech assistive communication tools. They will practice structured, non-leading interview techniques using real-world scenarios. The content draws on peer-reviewed research on acquiescence bias, false confessions, competency, and witness credibility. Participants leave with practical skills they can use right away.

About the speakers:

Dr. Rebecca Mandal-Blasio is the Clinical Director in Louisiana for Autism Spectrum Therapies and is a BCBA-D. She leads a team of BCBA Supervisors and Behavior Interventionists serving families in and around the New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and the Florida Parishes areas. A Louisiana native, Dr. Mandal-Blasio received her Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi and completed her pre-doctoral internship at the Kennedy Krieger Institute of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as part of the Neurobehavioral Outpatient Unit and Pervasive Developmental Disorders Clinic. She also completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill's Center for Development and Learning where she studied mental health issues in people with developmental disabilities across the lifespan. She is a licensed psychologist in the state of Louisiana and the former Director of the Northlake Resource Center on Developmental Disabilities where she conducted statewide training for caregivers and professional on topics related to people who have a dual diagnosis of developmental disabilities and psychiatric/behavior problems. Dr. Mandal-Blasio has presented on these topics nationally and internationally in addition to publishing articles and chapters.

Sharon Delvisco has over 30 years of experience. Sharon enjoys advocating for people with disabilities. She has provided supported employment, supported living, community connections, mentoring, behavior and life skills support for people with all abilities, their families and the agencies that provide services to live in the community. She believes all people should be supported to live the lifestyle of their choice in the community. “Separate is not equal” is the guiding principle for all her work and advocacy efforts in the human services field. Sharon is an advisor for the Louisiana People First Chapter self-advocacy group. She has experience organizing, facilitating, and developing training for people with disabilities, their families and the agencies that provide community-based services. She has planned conferences, events, facilitated board retreats, developed and provided training in a variety of locations. She has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of New Orleans and a master’s degree in social work from Southern University at New Orleans. Sharon received her doctorate in Social Work Innovation from USC School of Social Work. Sharon is employed as the Project Director of Training and Curriculum Development with Team Dynamics, LLC.

Chanel Jackson |Executive Director | Families Helping Families Region 7

Chanel Jackson is a passionate advocate, dedicated community leader, and accomplished nonprofit executive with nearly two decades of experience supporting individuals with disabilities and their families. As the Executive Director of Families Helping Families Region 7, she has devoted approximately 18 years to empowering families, promoting inclusion, and ensuring that individuals with disabilities have access to the resources, services, and opportunities they need to thrive.

Under her leadership, Families Helping Families Region 7 serves families across nine parishes in Northwest Louisiana, providing information, education, training, advocacy support, and connections to vital community resources. Chanel is deeply committed to helping parents understand their rights, navigate complex systems, and become confident advocates for their children.

Her passion for family empowerment extends far beyond her role as Executive Director. Chanel serves as Vice Chair of the Shreveport Mayor's Advisory Council on Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance and chairs the Before the Last Straw Caregiver Empowerment Day Committee. Through these leadership roles, she works to strengthen community partnerships, elevate the voices of families, and promote greater accessibility, inclusion, and support for individuals with disabilities and their caregivers.

Chanel's dedication to community service and leadership has earned her recognition, including being named a 2026 50 Under 50 honoree. Under her leadership, Families Helping Families Region 7 was also recognized as a 2026 Silver Winner for Best Nonprofit in Shreveport-Bossier.

As both a nonprofit leader and a parent, Chanel understands the importance of equipping families with knowledge, encouragement, and meaningful support. She believes that every child deserves to be safe, valued, protected, and given the opportunity to reach their fullest potential.

Through her work, Chanel continues to champion family engagement, disability awareness, caregiver empowerment, and stronger systems of support for children and families throughout Northwest Louisiana.
